There are two phases for the public launch of the .mx domain. These are the Quiet Period and the Initial Registration Period, when .mx became available for the first time to the general public to register. We are currently in the Initial Registration Period.

Initial Registration Period
The .mx registry has opened its doors to the general public for the first time, for the registration of first level .mx domains!
This is a first-come-first-served period. Registrations take place in real-time so it is important to get your domain registrations in as quickly as possible. If the domain name is available at the time the when the application is received, then it will be registered to you. The domain will be registered for a period of 1 year only.
If you are seriously considering a .mx domain registration then you really need to place an order during this period.
Quiet Period
This is the period that previous domain name holders of second level .mx domain names, for example .com.mx, .org.mx, .net.mx, .edu.mx or .gob.mx, registered before March 1st 2009 have any applications for first level .mx domains processed. At the end of this period, these applications will become active.
