The .xxx domain launched in September 2011, when the Sunrise phase began. This was followed by the Landrush phase, before the domain was opened up for General Availabilty.

.xxx Domain registration
Make sure you apply during the .xxx Sunrise AD (Adult Existing Domain Names) phase to protect your existing brand, business and identity.
Sunrise AD (Adult Existing Domain Name)
Current Owner (for pre-existing domain name owners for another TLD)
Duration: SEPT 7th 2011 - OCT 28th 2011
- Apply during this phase if you can show that you already own a corresponding domain registration in another gTLD or ccTLD and operate within eligible commerce for the .xxx domain extension. For example, if you currently own yourdomain.com and would like to apply for yourdomain.xxx, you should do so during this period.
- Pre-existing adult domain names must have been registered prior to 00:00 UTC 1st February 2010 and be in active use. Please note that this excludes domains used primarily for parking or forwarding.
- The .xxx Sunrise AD (Adult Existing Domain Names) phase runs parallel to the other .xxx Sunrise AT and SRB phases.
- This phase is not first-come, first-served and if more than one valid application is received for a domain during the Sunrise phase, then the name will be entered into an auction. Applicants will then have the opportunity to bid for the domain name. Auctions are operated by Pool.com.
- Unsuccessful Sunrise AD (Adult Existing Domain Names) applications will receive a refund of $50 to the original payment card approximately 7 working days from notification by the registry.
