The .xxx domain launched in September 2011, when the Sunrise phase began. This was followed by the Landrush phase, before the domain was opened up for General Availabilty.

.xxx Sunrise Trademark Domain registration
Domain applications during the .xxx Sunrise AT, SRB and Sunrise AD phases is critical if you wish to protect your Trademark and brand. Sunrise phases occur concurrently.

Sunrise AT - Adult Trademark
Adult Industry (for rights owners from within the adult entertainment industry)
Duration: SEPT 7th 2011 - OCT 28th 2011
- Apply during this phase if own an existing Trademark within the adult entertainment industry and have elected to become a member of the sponsored community.
- Domain applications during Sunrise AT (Adult Trademark) and Sunrise AD (Existing Adult Domain) will receive priority over Sunrise SRB (Non-Community Trademark) applications.
- This phase is not first-come, first-served and if more than one valid application is received for a domain during the Sunrise phase, then the name will be entered into an auction. Applicants will then have the opportunity to bid for the domain name.
- .xxx Sunrise AT (Adult Trademark) applications are non-refundable.
Sunrise SRB - Non-Community Trademark
Block Name (for rights owners from outside of the adult entertainment industry)
Duration: SEPT 7th 2011 - OCT 28th 2011
- Apply during this phase if you own a Trademark from outside the adult entertainment industry.
- This phase is specifically for those outside of the Adult Entertainment Industry who do not wish to register any names in the .xxx extension, but would like to block and protect their Trademarks from being registered by others.
- Successful application during this phase will not result in a conventional resolving domain name. Successful applications during this phase will resolve to a standard plain page indicating only that the domain is reserved from use through the ICM registry's rights protection program.
- Standard registry contact details will be contained within the domain WHOis.
- Domain applications during Sunrise AT (Adult Trademark) and Sunrise AD (Existing Adult Domain) will receive priority over Sunrise SRB (Non-Community Trademark) applications.
- .xxx Sunrise SRB (Non-Community Trademark) applications are non-refundable.
