Google Maps a Blessing for Local Businesses
Google Maps, Google's free map viewing tool, can be a real boon for a small business. As well as simply looking up maps of locations all over the world, and routes from A to B, internet users can use the tool to search their area for local businesses or facilities. They'll see markers on a map which show the locations of their results, and can then visit the business' own websites, and read and post reviews.
Having your business on Google Maps is an absolute must, especially if you are a small business rather than a chain. Restaurants, drycleaners, hardware shops, hotels, hairdressers, jewellers, antiques shops… These sorts of businesses can all benefit from a Google Maps listing.
Getting a listing is free, and Google offers a couple of extra ways to promote your business further once you've got your marker on the map. All you need is your name and address, telephone, mobile and fax numbers, and email and website details if applicable. Provide a brief and accurate description of your business and opening hours, say which payment methods you accept, and select up to five categories for your business.
Businesses with a website usually do better on a service like Google Maps, because a good website lends credibility to your business, and if customers have to actually leave the house – shock, horror! – to buy products or services from you, they'll want to know that their trip is going to be worthwhile. The more information you can provide them with, the better. However, that said, the advantage of Google Maps is that you can have an internet presence for free, without having a website.
After this, you just need to wait for the verification of your choice to arrive – in some parts of the US, you can be verified by telephone, but otherwise you will receive a postcard in the mail. This is basically to ensure that you are who you say you are and that your listing can be trusted. After this, your listing will be found on Google Maps, Google Earth, Froogle Shopping and other Google services.
Google Maps also allows you to add a coupon promotion to your listing so that visitors who find you via Google services can print out a coupon with whatever offer you choose. This free and very simple to set up, and it might give you a good idea of how many customers are finding you via your Google listing.
