How Google is Organised
Google has a huge index of over three billion pages. This is a vast quantity of data and some strict organisation is required to make it work. Google has several data centres located around the globe, spreading the workload between more than ten thousand computers. Google crawls sites continually and updates its index, but of course this can’t happen instantly because of the sheer quantity of data, so results around the time of the re-index can move up and down somewhat. Every time you do a search using Google, it returns results from one of the data centres – usually, although not always, that in closest geographical proximity. Google also has two test domains – www2.google.com and www3.google.com – where new algorithms are tested. If you’re interested in what search results might like look like in future, you can have a play with those.
