What is ICANN?
In 1998 a non-profit organisation was set up overseeing the Internet’s functionality at the US government (and other bodies) request. Previously the only company managing domain name registration was Network Solutions.
ICANN uses its budget of $7.5 million to aid in disputes regarding domain name registration. The organisation is very important because more or less everything established on the Internet can connect to a Domain Name.
They are trying to be more adaptable and the structure of the company is under review. Accrediation can be a vigorous process where Domain Names can be issued directly. Those companies who are not accredited are resellers.
Membership is available for a fixed fee per annum but may vary slightly with the amount of domains registered. Benefits of joining include wholesale pricing and the credibility accreditation.
