Link Strategy for Search Engine Optimisation
PageRank is the ranking algorithm used by the world’s most popular search engine, Google. It analyses the way that websites are linked to one another in order to rank pages in order of importance. The following is a quotation www.google.com/technology/index.html the technology section of Google’s website:
"PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages' relative importance.
Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines dozens of aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query."
Clearly, interlinking is extremely important. Here are a few ways that you can optimise your site for better PageRank results:
Directory listing: Get your site listed in the Open Directory Project (Dmoz). Google uses this directory in its indexing, and it is also used by other search engines. A listing in the Yahoo! directory costs £199, but it may well be worth it if you are a serious e-commerce site, since Yahoo! is a leading directory. There is also a whole variety of lesser and local directories that might be worth looking at as well.
Link requests: Ask sites with content related to your own to put a link on their site with relevant anchor text. Choose sites that are already well-ranked and that you think will be likely to accept requests for outgoing links. You could put a link on your site first and then ask for a reciprocal link. Alexa.com can show you highly ranked pages, and you can then approach their webmasters.
Inter-site links: Internal links contribute to your PageRank too, so make sure that your site is well-structured. This will also make it more attractive to people accepting requests for links to your site.
Articles: Publish relevant, keyword rich articles on your site, preferably written by professionals, with permission to repost so long as a link remains intact. These will draw genuine interest from search engine visitors, earn clicks to your site wherever they are reposted, and good quality articles may be linked to by people who found them relevant and useful.
