Online Payment Options for your Customers
Giving your customers a choice of payment options can increase sales.
Whilst credit cards are the most popular method of payment online, it can be helpful to offer your customers alternative ways of paying for things (especially if you take many payments of less than £1), if your profit margin will allow. This is because letting your customers pay in the most convenient way for them will make you seem like a more thoughtful and considerate seller. What is more, you reduce the chances of losing customers who simply don't have a credit card (such as young people).
MetaCharge is one example of a merchant account for processing online transactions. Using a MetaCharge account, you can take payments via your website, through the post, over the telephone or in person. They accept all major credit cards and offer an impressive range of features. Accounts start at £125.
PayPal is a great option to add to your site. PayPal customers can pay either directly with a credit or debit card, or using their own PayPal account. There are no setup fees; you only pay per transaction. Also, you're under no obligation to use PayPal – unlike many merchant accounts, there is no minimum period during which you are required to stick to the service.
Nochex is similar to PayPal, but UK-based and focused on smaller businesses. Again, there are no monthly fees.
