With the Sunrise period drawing to a close on the 31st October, the ICM Registry have had a chance to take stock on the number of applications received during the initial stage of launch. Yesterday, the Registry put out a press release revealing the total number of applications that poured in, far exceeding their original, seemingly conservative estimate.

Originally ICM hoped that it would receive in the region of 10,000 applications across the different Sunrise stages, however even a week before the original close date they had counted over 42,000 applications. The final count, which was tallied after the registry made the decision to extend the stage by three days, stands at more than 80,000 applications.

From the statistics released by the registry, it seems that the majority of these were savvy trademark holders who have acted quickly to protect their brands in the .XXX namespace, as well as a large number of domains that were allocated to members of the adult community during the ICM Founders Program.

Naturally the ICM Registry are over the moon at the huge success of the New TLD, even within the very first stage. Stuart Lawley, CEO at ICM is already looking forward to the results of Landrush:

“We couldn't be happier about the success of the Sunrise period… We look forward with great anticipation to Landrush, opening next week and General Availability on December 6, which is when the fun really starts."

So now that Sunrise is over, what are the eligibility criteria for the remaining stages? Landrush, which opens on November the 8th is a period designed for members of the adult community only, and anyone making an application during this time must “self-attest” to being a member of the adult community, following the Membership Validation procedures laid out by the Registry. Any matching applications at this stage will result in a closed auction between the applicants.

General Availability is when the .XXX domains go truly live! Registrations are placed on a first come first served basis, and members of the Adult or Non Adult community are eligible to purchase their chosen domain name at this stage.
