The TLD was initially intended for use by internet service providers (ISPs) and other network-orientated entities, but as there are no formal restrictions on who may register .net domain name, it has become popular for all kinds of websites, and is sometimes treated as a secondary version of .com. The .net registry database is currently operated by VeriSign.
