Web Design Glossary
New to domain name registration and the terminology associated with it? Within the Domainmonster.com glossary section there are explanations to help you understand everything associated with domains.
RSS
RSS (which, in the current version, stands for Really Simple Syndication) is a means of accessing the vast amount of information that now exists on the World Wide Web via syndicated web feeds
. Instead of the user browsing Websites for information of interest, information is sent directly to users who have subscribed to the web feed. Blogs are an example of content which is often syndicated for use in web feeds. RSS can also be used to publish material from a web feed on a website, or even to publish an aggregation of several websites' content.
In order to subscribe to an RSS feed, the user needs an RSS reader, sometimes called an aggregator. This is a program which collects the raw XML news feeds from websites that are RSS-compatible, and turns them into text, images and links that a user can browse at his or her leisure. Aggregators include web browsers, email clients and dedicated programs.
The user can select feeds from websites which are of interest to them, and instruct their aggregator to collect these feeds. This allows them to scan the latest information from a range of sources without having to visit many different websites.
Websites must specifically set up their material to be syndicated to work with the RSS reader. Most big news websites, as well as blogs and journals, now offer RSS feeds to their visitors. The link to click to subscribe to a feed is usually highlighted with the orange RSS logo.
